TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE
The Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival 2010 will present the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE®, a series of tall ship port to port races coordinated by the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) across all five Great Lakes. In addition to supporting youth sail-training and historical preservation of tall ships, ASTA has partnered with Great Lakes United to generate awareness of the need for water conservation.
The Festival will take place from June 30th to July 4th and Toronto will be the first and only Canadian port. Over the 5 day Festival, 15 international and local ships will participate, a fleet not seen here since 1994. The Festival will enhance the Toronto lakeside experience by delivering a premiere event that will also provide environmental educational programming through its interactive Green Village, as well as cultural entertainment through unique "TALL SHIP" experiences.
In addition to promoting the Great Lakes region's maritime history, the Festival will celebrate Toronto's diversity and engage our multi-cultural population by pairing specific ships with local, regional, provincial, national and international cultural organisations and/or associations.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
In addition to the multi-cultural programming on deck and dockside, activities for the Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival 2010 include:
- Follow the 'Red Path' along the waterfront to experience the majestic beauty, cultural story and international history of each Tall Ship.
- Environmental "Green Village" that will consist of exhibit booths and interactive programming devoted to environmental education and our collective need to protect the eco-system of our Great Lakes region, the worlds largest freshwater resource
- Customised evening events/receptions on ship decks and dockside areas
- Enjoy cultural entertainment, music, food and special events at Queen's Quay Terminal, Harbourfront Centre and all along Toronto's waterfront!
- The Festival is partnering with Harbourfront Centre and will promote the Centre's perfectly aligned World Routes and Canada Day programming and entertainment that will take place during the Festival
- Parade of Sail: One of the most dramatic moments of the Festival, Toronto's harbour will pause as we salute from land and water the departure of the ships, July 4th at 2pm. The Festival is partnering with Ontario Place for this event and will be selling tickets for prime viewing of the Parade of Sail at the Ontario Place seating stands along Lake Ontario

The Waterfront Business Improvement Area [BIA]
The BIA is an association of commercial property owners and tenants within a defined area who work in partnership with the City of Toronto to create thriving, competitive, and safe business areas that attract shoppers, diners, tourists, and new businesses.
The Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival represents a major initiative managed by the Waterfront BIA to generate local and tourist traffic and awareness of the waterfront area while delivering in the social context through support of many local charities.
Toronto’s urban waterfront is a stone’s throw from the downtown and financial core. The many recreational and cultural activities add to the allure of this unique neighbourhood. Lake Ontario and the Toronto Islands form a spectacular backdrop to the beautiful waterfront promenade, its hotels, shops, services, restaurants, parks and gardens. Living, working, shopping, dining. It’s better by the water.
The Waterfront BIA is grateful to the immense support, creativity and contributions of the Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival Honourary Patrons and Festival Team.
